The waters around Cavite, the naval and port town on Manila Bay, were worked by traditional Philippine boats that carried goods and passengers along the coast. The guilalo and parao were among the sailing craft of the bay region.
José Honorato Lozano documented this vessel as part of his Tipos del País watercolors, a body of work produced in the mid-nineteenth century recording the boats, occupations, and daily life of Philippine society. The Guilalo o Parao de Cavite depicts a traditional boat of Cavite, recording the watercraft that moved goods and people across Manila Bay. Lozano worked primarily in Manila and produced illustrations that served as visual records of Philippine society for both local and foreign audiences. His work is considered among the most detailed and culturally specific visual documentation of the Philippines in the Spanish colonial period.
