Binondo, established in 1594, is recognized as the oldest Chinatown in the world. Its parish church, founded by Dominican friars, served the district's Chinese and mestizo Catholic community through the Spanish colonial period.
José Honorato Lozano documented this building as part of his Tipos del País watercolors, a body of work produced in the mid-nineteenth century recording the architecture, costumes, and daily life of Philippine society. The Iglesia Parroquial de Binondo depicts the parish church of Binondo, recording one of the notable religious structures of colonial Manila. Lozano worked primarily in Manila and produced illustrations that served as visual records of Philippine society for both local and foreign audiences. His work is considered among the most detailed and culturally specific visual documentation of the Philippines in the Spanish colonial period.
