The Chinese community of colonial Manila maintained its own religious and cultural structures, including temples and shrines that reflected traditions carried from China. These buildings were a visible part of the multicultural fabric of the colonial capital.
José Honorato Lozano documented this structure as part of his Tipos del País watercolors, a body of work produced in the mid-nineteenth century recording the architecture, costumes, and daily life of Philippine society. The Pagoda China depicts a Chinese temple or pagoda, recording the religious architecture of the Chinese community in the colonial Philippines. Lozano worked primarily in Manila and produced illustrations that served as visual records of Philippine society for both local and foreign audiences. His work is considered among the most detailed and culturally specific visual documentation of the Philippines in the Spanish colonial period.
