Mayon Volcano, in the province of Albay, is known for its near-perfect conical form and its long record of eruptions. The town of Oas and its church stood within the volcano's province, in a region defined by the mountain's presence.
José Honorato Lozano documented this scene as part of his Tipos del País watercolors, a body of work produced in the mid-nineteenth century recording the landscapes, architecture, and daily life of Philippine society. The Vista del volcán de Albay y de la iglesia de Oas depicts the volcano with the church of Oas, recording the landscape and religious architecture of the Bicol region. Lozano worked primarily in Manila and produced illustrations that served as visual records of Philippine society for both local and foreign audiences. His work is considered among the most detailed and culturally specific visual documentation of the Philippines in the Spanish colonial period.
This print preserves a record of the Albay landscape and the church of Oas in the mid-nineteenth century.
