About the Print
ABOUT THE ARTWORK
This chromolithograph trade card depicts a young Filipino man and woman using Singer sewing machines, labeled "Manila" and published in 1892 by the Singer Manufacturing Co. of New York. The card is part of Singer's "Costumes of All Nations" series, a set of 22 chromolithograph cards produced from photographs taken in the countries depicted and distributed in boxed sets at the 1893 World Columbian Exposition in Chicago. The Manila card is among the rarest in the series and is held in the collections of the Wisconsin Historical Society. It documents how the Philippines was represented in American commercial print culture in the final decade of Spanish colonial rule.
