About the Print
About the artwork
A Damsel Going to Early Mass (Una India de Manila) is an 1841 Tipos del País watercolor depicting a Filipina woman dressed for church attendance during the Spanish colonial period. The figure wears a traditional baro’t saya ensemble covered by a dark cloak with contrasting blue lining, reflecting clothing associated with urban Filipina women in 19th-century Manila. The work belongs to the Tipos del País tradition, which documented the people, dress, and social customs of colonial Philippine society through detailed costume studies.
