About the Print
About the artwork
Mapa de las Yslas Philipinas is one of the most significant early maps of the Philippine archipelago, originally published in 1734 by Spanish Jesuit cartographer Pedro Murillo Velarde. The composition presents detailed geographic renderings of Luzon, Visayas, and Mindanao alongside decorative cartouches and maritime illustrations characteristic of 18th-century colonial cartography. Widely regarded as the “Mother of All Philippine Maps,” the work played an important role in documenting Spanish territorial knowledge and administration of the islands during the colonial period.
About the artist
Pedro Murillo Velarde was a Spanish Jesuit priest, historian, and cartographer known for his extensive writings and cartographic studies of the Philippines during the Spanish colonial era. His 1734 map remains one of the most historically important cartographic records of the Philippine archipelago.
