About the artwork

This hand-colored illustration depicts a young mestiza portrayed in the Tipos del País tradition of the Spanish colonial Philippines. The composition highlights traditional attire, textile patterns, and social identity through detailed costume representation characteristic of 19th-century ethnographic illustration. Works from the Tipos del País tradition documented the diverse peoples and social classes of the Philippine archipelago during the colonial period.

Justiniano Asunción was a Filipino painter known for his Tipos del País illustrations depicting the people, clothing, and social customs of the Spanish colonial Philippines. His works remain important visual records of 19th-century Philippine life.
