Tipos del País, meaning "Types of the Country," was a watercolour tradition that flourished in 19th-century Manila, documenting the inhabitants of the Philippines at a moment when the colony was opening to the world. Merchants, laborers, mestizas, and ilustrados, each rendered with the detail of a formal portrait. Today these works stand as the most vivid record of daily life in Spanish colonial Philippines.
